YES To AV.

YES To The UK Alternative Vote (AV).
...
:: STORY UPDATE ::
By Allegra Stratton.
1. AV referendum: "Yes" campaign handed thumping defeat.
2. "No" campaign establishes unassailable lead of 69% to 31%.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/may/06/av-over-yes-campaign-routed
May 7, 2011.
...
Let us try the Alternative Vote (AV)
for the next three general elections and then
determine if it is a better system than the one
we have right now of first-past-the-post
in the UK.
...
For all too long the members and supporters
of the three mainline British parties - Tories,
Labourites, and Lib-Dems - have held a
monopoly on political power and parliamentary
representation at the expense of other voices
and the aspirations of small parties and their
candidates to be heard and recognized
inside today's House of Commons.
...
Whatever the pros and cons are said to
be for and against the May 5th, 2011,
Alternative Vote (AV) Referendum to re-
place the present UK voting system, I
shall be firmly voting YES!!
...
What I like about voting Yes to the AV is
precisely because is is an alternative to
what we have.
...
While I politically loathe Nick Clegg, who has instigated
and started the AV Referendum, I am voting Yes for
AV and most ceertainly not for him. The same is true
of hideous loser Red Ken Livingstone, who is once
again running against good Mayor of London Boris
Johnson, in his (Red Ken's) endorsement of the AV
Referendum. I loathe him as a political creep on apar
with my utter distaste for vile and treacherous Tony
Blair. The AV Referendum is not based on poltical
personalities, but on raw political change that is so
very much needed in today's Broken Britain.
.
A ‘yes’ to voting reform could be death
for Mr Cameron. By Iain Martin.
http://agora-dialogue.com/?p=19196
...
So to truly appreciate the AV Referendum is to dismiss
such personalities per se and to see instead the rotten
politics that has been cultivated for keeps under our
present and detrimental system of first-past-the-post.
Some say the AV electoral count and process is too
cumbersome compared to what we have right now.
It matters not one itoa how cumbersome the new
process may or may not be, but rather how fair and
proper we elect those candidates who don't
represent just the three mainline parties.
...
Loud screams that the British National Party
(BNP) could win seats under the AV system is
pure hysteria by those against the BNP or against
any change which dilutes the power and control
over the British Parliament by those three
entrenched national parties that serve themselves
first more often than those with differing opinions
and smaller voices among the UK electorate.
...
Inexplicably, BNP chairman and elected MEP
Nick Griffin, has come out strongly against the YES
Vote for the AV Referendum. Pity! But Nick's
opposition to AV I think is perhaps based as much
on his very personal and utter political dislike for the
ilk of Clegg and Livingstone and the origin of the AV
coming from the almost far left, instead of coming
from the traditional right, that Nick Griffin feels so
compelled to yell and support the "No" to AV
Referendum. To vote either way for AV
should not be based on personalities, as I
said before, or whether or not we like or
dislike Griffin, Clegg, Livingstone and/or Blair.
.
"The BNP are campaigning against AV.  I would
suggest that one reason why the BNP are against
AV is that they ... It's Confirmed – BNP to
support 'No to AV' vote in Referendum ..."
http://isupportav.co.uk/2010/11/the-bnp-are-campaigning-against-av/
...
Under AV, we can also see how other indvidiuals
from the far left, and not just from the far right, could
also be voted in. That's fine with me no matter if I
strongly disagree with a particular elected member
based on his or her politics. The more of a mix of
parliamentary representives we have then more
the better I say.
....
The middle ground is middle politics and that is
fine with the middle class voter. But not with
me and millions like me who are tired of all the
middle and muddle that comes with such a
passive mass so evident all around us from
partliament to mass immigration to education
and to political representation. We need to try
something else and I think YES to the AV
Referendum would bring about that needed
urgent change for a positive change!!
...
Vote "YES" To AV.
...
And so, let's try it, has I've said, for at least the
next three general elections and then determine
if we should try something else or revert back
to what we now have of first-past-the-post.
.
'A referendum? Really?' Apathy and anger
dominate as AV decision looms. Both camps
struggle to convince voters of importance of
5 May poll – in town that would have had
a different MP under AV.
By Caroline Davies
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/apr/15/alternative-vote-referendum-chesterfield
...
As a stictly independent voter that I am, I
favour YES because I think AV provides
a sound and exciting vehicle to those of us
who are independent voters outside the three
national parties in the UK. And, who are also
alienated at the present lopsided representation
by the powerful lobbies and connected people
inside our present parliament. Anything
that gives the independent voter a greater
say in running the country and possibly deter-
mining its future course should be welcome
in any democracy no matter how facile our
parliament really is to those with big money
and big voices and big self-interests, along
with it being so frigid at times and completely
out of touch on major burning issues such
as mass immigration, negative welfare, and
the wholesale waste of taxpayer money by
such quangos as Equalities and Human Rights
Commission (EHRC) that spends millions on
its tyrannical agenda to enforce its unelected
power on the people who oppose the trouble-
makers like the ilk of vile Trevor Phillips
and Simon Whoolley.
...
YES then to AV, I say once again.
May 5th, 2011, is an historic opportunity
and moment for the British Electorate to
vote YES for the Alternative Vote (AV)
Referendum and to change the way we
elect office holders in the future and not
just those who can mount votes to be
elected safely and repeatedly under
 first-past-the-post (FPTP).
...
Most other countries would never give its
citizens the opportunity or the change to re-
place their establish political voting systems
by such an AV concept. We can and we
should vote one way or another at such an
historic moment. Such will be even more
historic if the majority of voters vote YES to
AV like I most certainly will without a doubt.
...
Indeed, I may even seriously consider running
for office myself as an independent candidate, if
the YES vote prevails. I would feel I have then
a better chance of being elected and of show-
ing my fellow countrymen and women that I
can ably represent them as any present day
sitting first-past-the-post Member of Parliament
inside our rather closed and carefully controlled
British House of Commons that works, all too
often, against the true will of the English people.

The Times Letter to the Editor.
AV 'would usher in extremist parties'.
.
Sir, We will vote "No" on May 5 because we
think AV is less fair than our current system and
that it will provide an opportunity for extremist
parties such as the BNP (British Nationalist Party)
and Respect to increase their vote, become
more influential and legitimise in their
participation in mainstream British politics.
.
Under first-past-the-post (FPTP), everyone
is entitled to a vote and the BNP has never
been elected to Parliament. In (Chairman) Nick
Griffin's words, for the BNP "to continue fighing
first-past-the-post elections and securing an ever-
dwindling vote is simply a recipe for demoralisation
and failure." The BNP has long complained that
FPTP puts the party at a "hugely unfair
disadvantage".
...
AV would provide oxygen to groups such as the
BNP and Respect. While we hope that they would
still not win seats, AV would certainly give such
extremists a bigger platform, with more votes,
more attention, and more legitimacy. AV could
lead to BNP MPs if, as Nick Griffin and the
"Yes" campaign want, this becomes a "step in the
 right direction" to proportional representation.

:: My Online Reply To The Times Letter ::

.
Not one of the above signatories is an indepen-
dent voter like me. They all have some political,
religious, and/or social axe to grind  against AV.
What they fail to note is that BNP's Nick Griffin
has come out strongly AGAINST the AV "YES"
vote. Thus the point of their Times letter is largely
mute at this point. Also, it is extraordinary to find
so many foreign names gathered to sign against
the vote "Yes" to AV in the UK that is amply
confirmed by the alien names given and signed
by the almost 20 signatories.  Each of them are
clearly vested representatives for the status
quo. They have no desire or inclination or im-
agination to vote beyond their horse blinkers.
I'm wondering, too, if the foreign-born or
immigrants are those most opposed to AV?
It's a UK decision, not a foreign one, to de-
termine the outcome of the AV Referendum.
...
The MPs included in the above letter are,
of course, those who have already gotten in
under the first-past-the-post system. So they
have a vested interest in retaining such a system
for themselves. As for the BNP and Respect
gaining some advantage if the AV becomes law,
then so be it. The wider the political spectrum
more the better. Those presently entrenched
 political and mainstream representatives
should not be allowed unabatedly to go on
and on unchallenged. For all too long, they
have been a kind of law unto themselves
and it's about time they were made to sit
up and not take for granted their unques-
tioned "eliteist position" in British politics.
They think they're some how entitled
because they first got elected under first-
past-the-post and so anything that disturbs
their chances of re-election under a new
system like the AV, frightens the living devil
out of them. Let them be frightened, I say!!
.
As a strictly independent voter, I
again state I shall vote "YES" for the
Alternative Vote (AV)  Referendum come
May 5th, 2011 via my mailed ballot. To hell,
then, with FPTP. So, please give me the letter
"A," then the letter "V," is what I say as a
registered and active British voter.
It's YES for me to AV!!

Anglo-Saxon Coins.

.
From Anglo-Saxon To Victorian English Coins.
By Uncle Monty.
Illustrations By Coin Book Author.
:-:
In 1890, now over 120 years ago, Llewellynn Jewitt,
F.S.A. wrote his little handbook entitled "English Coins
And Tokens" that was published in London by Swan
Sonnenschein & Co. for 1 shilling in hardback
with 128pp. in its third edition.
I found and bought Jewitt's gem for a British fiver
at Hastings while rummaging for old books at a junk
shop there last week. It is now the oldest book I have
on old English and world coins among my small but
rather select collection of such. Indeed, Llewellynn
Jewitt's book is valued as abit of a rarity in itself at
the list prices of between 13 to 38 quid thesedays
depending, of course, on the degree of foxing,
damage, and overall book condition.
:-:
Rare Coin Specimens of Only
 20 of Charles II (1660 to 1685)
:-:
With over 235 engraved black and white miniature
illustrations of British Anglo-Saxon to Victorian coins
(as seen in the above lead illustration of the Victorian
"Gothic" coins) and 17th century traders' tokens, the
Jewitt book is a rare treasure for those like me who
love old coins of every kind. But most especially for
me of those coins of the old English and Colonial
American type. The book is written primarily for
The Young Collector, so the cover says, yet the
information and details included in his now quite
rare handbook are sophisticated beyond the years
of most young coin collectors of both those of 120
years ago or of today's young 21st century
numismatists.
:-:
As an advanced coin collector myself, I have learned
so much I didn't know about Anglo-Saxon coinage
and coin mintage and issues under the various kings
and queens of England thanks to Jewitt's deep and
wide knowledge imparted in his serious and rather
 readable coin handbook of 1890.
:-:
English Gold Coins - Edward III (1327 to 1377)
:-:
Among the things I learned from Jewitt's coin book
included some new knowledge of the following
such as gun money and rare mintmarks. Also I
learned that some 60 to 70 different places of
coin mintage was common in the 12th to 14th
centuries inside old Albion or Britain. As for
Henry II (1145-1189), only sliver pennies were
minted, while silver halfpennies and pennies
were minted under Richard I (1189-1199).
:-:
Under King John (1199-1216), no English
coins are known to have been minted during
his reign. Short-cross pennies of Henry II,
however, continued to be minted during
John's 17 years on the British Throne.
While in Ireland, halfpennies and farthings
were minted of John's reign. So states
Llewellynn Jewitt's fascinating handbook.
:-:
Significantly under Henry III of England
(1207-1272) the first gold coins - The
Gold Penny  - were the first by any English
monarch. After Henry III, no gold coins
were minted in England until Edward III
(1327-1377).  In other words, for
almost 60 years, no English gold
coins were minted.
:-:
Anglo-Saxon Pennies Under
Mercian King Offa (757 to 796)
:-:
Under the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell (1653 to
1658), Gold Fifty-shilling, Broad or Twenty shilling, and
half-Broad or Ten shilling issues appeared. Also silver
ninepence and sixpence coins were put in circulation.
:-:
Followed by Charles II (1660 to 1685), that saw the
mintage of gold Five-Guinea-piece, Two-Guinea piece,
One Guinea, and Half-Guinea. Also the copper and
 tin farthing become commonplace.
:-:
James II (1685-1689) saw the rise of what was called
"Gun Money" during his very short reign of four years.
Llewellynn Jewitt spells out the meaning of English Gun
Money: "Silver being scarce in this reign, an issue of
base money was restored to, some of which, being
struck from old cannon and domestic utensils melted
 down, is called 'Gun Money.'"
:-:
Then we had the crazy George III (1760 to 1820) in whch
gold Third-of-guinea or Seven-shilling piece (7s.), Quarter-
of-guinea (5s. 3d), Sovereign (20s.) and Half-sovereign
(10s.) existed in his 60 year reign until the second decade
of the 19th century. Again with the great problem of silver
scarcity in 1797, it reached the point of using "Spanish
dollars and half-dollars that were countermarked with a
small punch of the king's head and put in circulation as
current coin value of 4 shillings and 9 pence," notes
Jewitt. The Spanish dollars and half dollars were soon
plagued by counterfeit stamp marks and so in 1804 a
new dollar was issued with the legend "Bank of England
Five Shillings Dollar, 1804." Under George III, too, a
large variety of copper coins were also struck for The
East India Company, Isle of Man, Prince of Wales
Island, Sierra Leone, Barbados, Ceylon, etc.
:-:
After George III came William IV ( 1830 to 1837)
and then, of course, Queen Victoria who reigned
from 1837 to 1901. Such being the longest reign
of any British monarch to date. Llewellynn Jewitt
was not to live to see the death of Victoria. And
so, his coin handbook deals only in the first stages
of the many designs and coin dye changes during
her long and almost 65 years on the throne. Under
her reign, Maundy Money is first mentioned by
Jewitt in his reference to Victorian coinage.
:-:
Perhaps in the coming days I'll add a little more
in telling you even more of what I have learned
from the 120 year-old coin handbook that is as
valid today as it was then. Indeed, it might be
more valid today than it was over a century ago
as far as its history and usefulness to numismatists
of English and worldwide coin collecting
of this day and age.

With pleasure, Uncle Monty.

Enthroned.

Anglican Enthronement of Bishop

They came all dressed up in their Sunday best,
at least for the most part, to the Anglican
Enthronememt, by invitation only, of the Tenth
Bishop of Southwark called Christopher Thomas
James Chessun, age 55.  Translated from Woolwich,
he steps into the consecrated shoes of Bishop Tom
Butler, who in 2010 reached his retirement age
of 70 after some late controversy during his
12 years at the ancient Southwark bishopic.
+
Tall and refined, Bishop Christopher is a quint-
essential Anglican bishop with his erudrite charm
and disarming persona. Popular with both the
consecrated and ordained clergy and parish laity,
the churchman was almost mobbed by the packed
crowd of onlookers at his impressive enthronement
that took place earlier last month at London's
renowned Southwark Cathedral.
+
As enthronements go, the Chessun one was
quite outstanding with every kind of civil and legal
dignitary also present to add so much class and
taste to the historic Anglican Rite
of Consecration.
+
Aside from other Anglican bishops partaking
in the eccesiastical ceremony, the representation
of ecumenical bodies - Catholic, Orthodox,
Buddhist, Coptic, Methodist, Episcopal, etc. -
was clearly evident with such clerical noteworthies
as the Catholic Archbishop Peter Smith of
Southwark, whose own enthronement, or more
correctly Installation, I attended last year at St.
George's Cathedral after being has he was
the Archbishop of Cardiff.
...
+
With at least a couple of thousand people seated inside
the packed cathedral, it was neccassy to deploy large
plasma flat panels, or TV screens, at various spots in
order for such folkz to view the full ceremony of en-
thronement. As the 'enthronee,' Bishop Christopher
Chessun seemed quite at home with the whole
event and seemed to also relish the attention poured
on him by the invited and friendly congregation.
Being flanked was he, too, by his fellow bishops,
the Cathedral Dean, and diocesan clergy during
the two hour or so long Anglican Rite.

+
The Anglican Enthronement of Bishop
Christopher Chessun also says that the Church
of England is still seemingly alive and well
despite falling attendance rates and less and
less English folkz seeking no longer to be
baptized, undergo holy matrimony, and/or hold
religious funerals within the church. There is a
 kind of anti-Christian disembowelment inside
"Broken Britain" thesedays in its mindless
quest to accommodate even those religious
traditions that are totally inimical to the tenets
of Christianity.  Perhaps it something to do
with being forced to "love thy enemy," but
such a religious rationale is frought with ever
greater danger to the survival of the church
against the vile forces of Islam and outright
secularism/humanism that had been allowed
to rear their ugly heads all in the name of so-
called diversity and tolerance. The whole
situation, frankly, is pitiful!!  And, it is almost
an open season on UK fundamental Christians
who dare act on their religious convictions
against homosexuality, public fornificiation,
internet pornography, and the decline of
religious grace. The slow and sure death of
Christianity is also hastened by those dis-
affected and alienated Christians who have
opted out at all cost from defending their church
and faith with utter impunity and contempt.
Along with such new-fangled gimmicks
besetting the English Church like the
 one recently reported herein:
.

+
The end of the Church Age may indeed be
much nearer than we think, especially in the
UK and in federalized Europe as a whole.
Such again is pretty pitiful. The Chessun enth-
ronement, in some regard, is a rather happy
distraction from the raw reality confronting
many of today's Anglicans, who for many are
embittened by the ordination of womenfolk and
and self-professing homosexuals who have
wreaked havoc on the church as noted by the
disconcerting election and iffy consecration
of hideous gay Gene Robinson of New
Hampshire within the worldwide Anglican
Communion. How one fellow like Robinson
could have done so much damage to the church,
especially The Episcopal Church, USA, is almost
mind-boggling.  Yet, Gene Robinson has gotten
away with it has he now plans soon to
finally retire. Good riddance to him!!
+
While the religious display of the Anglican
Rite of Enthronement at London's Southwark
Cathedral was most welcome, the real
underbelly of the cathedral habitat that I saw
wasn't welcome at all.  Next, read  below

Stupid obstacles were put in my way has I
covered the above story of mine for my blogz
on the Anglican Enthronement of Bishop
Christopher Chessun. Pompous ass or arse
Steve Harris and the women steward he
was with outside Glaziers Hall were totally
uncooperative and rather unAnglican to me.
They refused to help me cover the enthrone-
ment no matter what. Later, the same
woman was inside the cathedral and per-
sisted on interferring with me and showing off
whenever I tried  to photograph  the enthronement
gathering. She was just awful and on a power
trip like that Steve Harris of the ilk you'd expect
to find at some corny celebrity event instead
of inside a renowned British cathedral.  Like
her, pompous ass or arse Steve Harris
thought he, too, was so, so, so, important ...
+
Sadly, I had a similar situation at The Lambeth
Conference, 2008, with Rev'd (now Canon) John
Carter of the Ripton Docese who deliberately
prevented me from covering the ten-yearly
Anglican Conference at Canterbury in his
asinine role as "media coordinator" of the ten-
yearly worldwide Anglican event. Whenever I
have coverd other major religious events around
the world, aside from Anglican ones, I have
always been greeted and welcomed without
any problems or obstacles placed in my way.
When I covered, for example, Pope
Benedict VXI's Official State Visit to the UK
last year and more recently this year the pastoral
visit of Patriarch & Beatitude ILIA II of Russia,
I was made to feel right at home. But not so at the
Anglican Conference nor at the Southwark Diocese
as a lifelong traditional Anglican that I am. So
why do such Diocesan Anglicans behave so
unkindly and rather unAnglican to their
fellow faithful? It just beats me! I make no
apology for covering Bishop Chessun since
I have known him from when he was first
elected and consecrated as the Bishop of
Woolwich. He is a fine Anglican and an
outstanding Churchman. I have encountered
him from time to time over the past six years at
such events at Holocaust Day and at Christian
Unity Week at where he was with such bishops
as Bishop Bernard Longley of Westminster and
who is now the Archbishop of Birmingham.
Bernard Longley is a truly magnificant and kindly
man! I feel privileged to know him. He also has
an old namesake called Charles Thomas Longley
(1794-1868), who long ago became the Archbishop
of Canterbury in 1862. Earlier he had been the ABY,
Bishop of Ripton, and headmaster of Harrow.
+
I still feel so vexed that I was barricaded by
two officious and unhelpful and non-clerical
representatives of the Southwark Diocese at
their own whim and shameless self-importance,
along, albeit, with their ignorant shortsightedness.
+
This, I might also add, was the same diocese under
Very Rev'd Dean Colin Slee, since dead and buried
last year, who ban the traditional hymn "Jerusalem"
from Southwark Cathedral.  "Ban The Dean Who
Banned  Jersulam," I then wrote of him in utter dis-
gust of his unilateral ban of one of the most patriotic
hymns in all of England! But Colin Slee, like so many
modern day Anglican Church leaders, are mindlessly
caught up in their unaccountable desire to "out
liberal the radical liberals" infecting the Church of
England today ... That's why, I presume, he felt
compelled to ban Jerusalem at Cathedral
weddings and memorials, etc.
+
After the Slee episode, then came Bishop Tom
Bulter  - since retired - all somewhat tipsy and
smelling  of booze after leaving an invited reception
at the Irish Embassy. Upon leaving, Bishop Tom
 stumbled somewhat ungraciously into a
parked Jaguar and didn't seem to know if he
was coming or going as he sat inside all nonplus!
Finally, he made it to Cathedral Alley, albeit,
still in one unholy piece ... His Grace, ABC
Rowan Douglas Williams consoled no doubt
his fellow Anglican bishop, but did nothing to
publicly censure the soon to be retired Bishop
Tom. Now the retired good fella Tom can
drink to his heart's content without perhaps
embarrassing his fellow clergy and laity of
the Southwark Diocese ever again ...

As for pompous arse Steve Harris and that
dreadful woman steward with him, I shall take
steps to aviod them if I should ever see them
again upon ever wanting to visit Southwark
Cathedral ever again ... So, what I saw at the
Chessun Enthronement was simply "on the
darker side of the diocese."  Such also
marred much of the enthronement for
me personally and as an Anglican, too.
+
As an avid and an avowed Anglican, it
grieves me to have been treated so rottenly
by such an officous and self-important pair.
Whatever, I still got most of the photos I
wanted and I still successfully covered the
enthronement even if I had to dodge the
pitiful pair at the the Southwark Diocese's
Anglican Enthronement of Bishop Christopher
Chessun. I wish him all the best, whatever ...

While at Washington, D.C. a few years ago, I
had a wonderful encounter with the presiding
bishop of two-million member US Episcopal
Church Frank Tracy Griswold, who has since
retired. He was the Episcopal Bishop of Chicago
before heading the national church at New York.
+
And while in Australia at Melbourne, I encountered
(shown below) the whole diocesan clergy all in one
go at the Melbourne St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne,
which is the metropolitical and cathedral church of
the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. It was a mar-
vellous occasion. Such later was not the case, how-
ever, upon first meeting Bishop Gene Robinson of
New Hampshire at the Hay Literary Festival in
Wales. I happened to know the New Hamphire
diocese quite well upon having attended college
there in the Granite State some years earlier.
Gene Roberson left me utterly cold and I also
suspect ex-US Prez Jimmy Carter, too, who I
also met again at Hay and who attended Gene's
lecture sitting right in front of me! What the
Southern Baptist Carter thought of the Episcopal/
Anglican Robinson was something I almost wanted
to ask the ex-president as I chatted with him!
For once, however, I kept my gob shut on that!!

I have received an enquiry regarding the gentleman
shown below. Is he an Anglican bishop or not?
His name is James Campbell, I believe. I could not
find him listed at any official Anglican Church websites.
If you are aware of the gentleman herein in question,
please let me know his clerical status. He may, of
course, be one of those authocephalous buggers
for all we know ... E-mail: newsscope@k.st

All dressed in their national African costumes, the
women were seen inside Southwark Cathedral at
 Bishop Christopher Chessun's grand enthronement.
